The challenge
A public body that wants a PV plant with storage on its buildings or car parks must first show that it is feasible, often before a funding deadline, and then have it designed. These are two different jobs on two different timelines, and many public bodies have nobody in-house to do them.
The approach
In a first phase the technical director, as lead consultant, prepared six feasibility studies with their funding applications: for the Municipality of Grado (120 kW, 90 kWh storage), the Municipality of Lignano Sabbiadoro (120 kW, 90 kWh), ASP Ardito Desio (120 kW, 100 kWh) and the Consorzio di Bonifica Pianura Friulana (140 kW, 40 kWh), the Municipality of Gradisca d'Isonzo (130 kW, 100 kWh) and the Municipality of Palmanova (100 kW, 110 kWh).
TT then took on the design of the plants, with the technical director as project manager and lead designer: in Grado, a 140 kW plant with 30 kWh storage on a car park and a plant of about 160 kW on a car park extension; in Lignano Sabbiadoro, two school plants, 120 kW with 40 kWh for a primary school and 100 kW with 20 kWh for a secondary school; in Palmanova, a 120 kW plant with 100 kWh for ASP Ardito Desio.
The result
For the Municipality of Grado, the Municipality of Lignano Sabbiadoro and ASP Ardito Desio, the studies led to design assignments, now in progress, for five plants.
The technical director's role
The technical director, RafDouglas C. Tommasi, P.E., PhD, was lead consultant for the six studies and is project manager and lead designer for the designs that followed.
