Noise is where TT's work is most recent and most continuous. We measure noise in the field, build the acoustic model on GIS data, and deliver maps, plans and assessments that a public body can use to decide and to meet its legal obligations.
Problems we solve
An airport operator has to produce a strategic noise map and an action plan in every round of the Environmental Noise Directive 2002/49/EC (END). A road operator has to measure noise along its network for strategic mapping. A municipality needs a noise zoning plan for its territory. A European authority needs to check that a common calculation method gives correct results. Each case calls for reliable measurements, checked input data and a model that can be verified.
Services
We carry out strategic noise mapping and action plans, short and long-term noise monitoring campaigns, municipal noise zoning plans, noise impact assessments for EIAs, wind farms and industrial areas, and the design of road and motorway noise barriers. We train the client's staff who take measurements and we check the quality of data and deliverables.

Methods and tools
We work to Directive 2002/49/EC and with the common European method CNOSSOS-EU, for which TT developed the test cases for the European Commission. The technical director has co-authored papers on applying CNOSSOS-EU, presented at Internoise and ICA. For modelling we use CadnaA and INM, together with our own tools that link GIS data to the calculation models. For measurements we also design sound level meter networks and real-time monitoring systems.

Environmental Protection Agency of Ireland, fifth round of noise mapping. GIS and acoustics consultancy for the noise mapping and action plans required by the END.
Other work: monitoring and mapping at the airports of Pisa, Verona, Brescia and Elba; field campaigns with more than 100 measurement points for the strategic noise mapping of Friuli Venezia Giulia regional roads; strategic noise mapping of roads SP1 and SR203 for Veneto Strade; noise impact assessment of two wind farms in southern Italy. As an expert, the technical director worked on the strategic noise mapping of Niš in Serbia and on noise studies for the new airport on Gozo.
Environmental noise monitoring and mapping service for Turin International Airport: project management, liaison with local stakeholders, field noise data collection and collection of GIS and noise source data. Includes quality assurance of the noise mapping and deliverables and noise training for airport staff.

Contract ENV.C.3/SER/2013/0032 "Development of test cases for the common noise assessment methods" (CNOSSOS-EU). Project management, liaison with the Commission and international consultants, test site identification, training of field data collectors and field measurements. Supervised the internal CNOSSOS-EU algorithm and the quality assurance of data streams and deliverables.

Noise zoning plans for 28 municipalities: Amaro, Ampezzo, Arta Terme, Cavazzo Carnico, Cercivento, Comeglians, Enemonzo, Forni Avoltri, Forni di Sopra, Forni di Sotto, Lauco, Ligosullo, Ovaro, Paluzza, Paularo, Prato Carnico, Preone, Ravascletto, Raveo, Rigolato, Sauris, Socchieve, Sutrio, Tolmezzo, Treppo Carnico, Verzegnis, Villa Santina and Zuglio. Project management, liaison with local stakeholders, organisation of field noise measurements, preparation of the zoning plan and quality assurance of deliverables.
A Europe-wide study for the International Union of Railways, with 12 countries analysed in full, estimating how many people live close enough to depots, stabling sidings and yards to be affected by noise from parked trains, such as HVAC and auxiliary equipment running overnight. It combines AI-assisted satellite validation of parking locations with population grids, to give UIC evidence on whether EU limit values for parked-train noise are needed.
